Where the model picker lives
Release Notes (6825453) say: on the web, open the model menu from the message composer (the bar where you type). On mobile apps, the same control sits at the top of the chat. Free accounts see a smaller set; Plus, Pro, and eligible Business seats see reasoning levels and Pro-tier entries when your plan and rollout include them.

Step-by-step: pick a model on chatgpt.com

Sign in and confirm your plan
Open chatgpt.com with your own OpenAI account. In Settings → Subscription (or the profile menu), confirm Plus or Pro. Business seats follow workspace assignment—check with your admin if the picker looks limited.

Open the model picker before you send
Start a new chat or open an existing one. On web, click the model name in the composer; on mobile, tap the model control at the top of the thread. If a model is greyed out, help text says you may have hit a usage allowance for that tier—your subscription stays active; try again later or pick another level.

Choose Instant for speed or reasoning for harder tasks
Help articles describe Instant for everyday, fast replies. For multi-step work, select a reasoning level (Medium / High on Plus; Extra High and Pro-only tiers on Pro where shown). Pick the level before you send the message—changing mid-thread starts a new behavior path for that turn.

Pro only: select Extra High or Pro models
Article 20001354 lists Extra High and Pro entries (including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro and GPT-6 Pro in Chat) for eligible Pro plans. “About ChatGPT Pro tiers” explains allowances and that GPT-6 Pro in Chat is not included on Plus. If Pro models are missing, confirm you are on a Pro tier that includes them and that rollout has reached your account.

Use Configure for Instant auto-switch and legacy
Open Configure from the picker (wording may be “Customize” or a gear icon). Help text lets eligible plans toggle Instant automatically switching to Medium on harder prompts, enable legacy models when offered, and set default thinking intensity for reasoning modes. Save and send a test prompt to verify behavior.
When the picker does not match the table
Gradual rollout
Release Notes warn that model lists roll out over time. Two Plus accounts may show different labels until OpenAI finishes deployment—refresh the app or sign out/in once before assuming a billing error.
Workspace admin locks
Business and Enterprise admins can limit which models members see. If you expect Pro models on a company seat, ask the workspace owner whether GPT-6 Pro or Extra High is enabled.
Wrong surface
Third-party apps, API keys, and older desktop builds may not expose the same picker. This guide is for chatgpt.com and official ChatGPT mobile apps only.

Why is my Pro model greyed out?
Help articles describe temporary unavailability when you reach a model-specific allowance. Your subscription remains; try another level or wait for the limit to reset per “About ChatGPT Pro tiers”.
Does the picker apply inside Projects?
Projects reuse chatgpt.com threads with project files and instructions. Model choice still uses the composer/top-of-chat picker for that conversation unless workspace policy blocks a model.
