DUMMYIf you keep pasting the same background for long-running work on chatgpt.com—drafts, research, event planning—OpenAI Help describes ChatGPT Projects as smart workspaces: related chats, reference files, and project instructions live together, and chats you start inside a project share that context.

This page follows OpenAI Help Center “Projects in ChatGPT” (help.openai.com/fr/articles/10169521) for creating a project in 2026, adding files or pasted text, writing project instructions, and chatting inside the project—including plan file limits and how project instructions override global Custom instructions.

Max simultaneous uploads

OpenAI says Projects group chats, files, and instructions so ChatGPT can support ongoing writing, research, and planning. Free and paid plans are available globally; Business, Enterprise, and Edu can share with teammates. Help text dated 22 October 2025 notes sharing for Free, Plus, Pro, Go, and others on web and mobile where your account shows the option.

Four steps: your first ChatGPT Project

  1. 1

    Sign in at chatgpt.com

Use your own OpenAI account on chatgpt.com or the official ChatGPT mobile apps. Projects require sign-in; workspace policies may limit sharing.

  2. 2

    Sidebar → New project

In the left sidebar, choose New project. Enter a name and pick an icon and color so multiple projects stay easy to tell apart.

  3. 3

    Add reference files

In the project Sources area, upload PDFs, spreadsheets, documents, images, or paste text. Help text says ChatGPT uses what you add for more informed answers. Open sources later to preview, download, or delete.

  4. 4

    Write project instructions

Open the project more options (•••) menu → Project settings. Add instructions that apply only in this project—for example: “Act like my marketing mentor. Be concise. Use bullet points. Ask clarifying questions.”

Project instructions vs global Custom instructions

Help text is explicit: project instructions apply only inside that project and override your global Custom instructions in Settings. Keep long-lived persona in global settings; put client-, course-, or product-line tone and format in project instructions.

01

Files become shared context

New chats inside the project can use uploaded files and responses you saved to the project (Save to project / Add to project sources). You do not need to re-paste the same PDF every message.

02

Move older chats in

Drag a chat onto the project or use Move to project from the chat menu. After moving, the chat inherits project instructions and file context. Chats created with a Custom GPT may not be eligible—start a fresh chat inside the project instead.

03

Memory settings

When you create a project you can pick default memory or project-only memory. Help text says you can change this later in project settings; with project-only memory, chats may reference other chats in the same project but not outside it.

Start chatting inside the project

  1. 1

    Open the project

Select it in the sidebar. The project view lists Chats and Sources (files and connected sources).

  2. 2

    Start a project chat

Begin a new conversation inside the project. It automatically carries project instructions, Sources files, and (per memory settings) context from other chats in the same project.

  3. 3

    Use the usual tools

Help text lists Canvas, image generation, voice, and web search inside projects; extras such as agent mode or Deep Research depend on your subscription. Study mode does not apply to project conversations.

  4. 4

    Share when you collaborate

Where sharing is available, choose Share to invite others. In a shared project, ChatGPT can draw from group chats, files, and instructions. Deleting a file in a shared project removes it for everyone.

File upload edge cases

Help text says if you upload a file with the same name as an existing project file, choose Upload anyway or Skip; in multi-file uploads, Skip affects only the conflicting file. You can also paste supported app links (Google Drive, Slack, and others) as sources after connecting the app. Batch uploads still respect the ten-files-at-once cap and your plan’s per-project total.

Are Projects the same as Custom GPTs?

No. Projects organize chats, files, and project instructions. Custom GPTs are a different publishable GPT builder. Help text says chats created with a GPT usually cannot move into a Project—start a new chat inside the project.

Can Free accounts use Projects?

Help text says Projects are available to Free and paid subscriptions globally. Free allows up to five files per project; Go/Plus allow 25; higher plans allow 40.

Do project instructions change my global settings?

They do not edit what you saved as global Custom instructions, but inside that project they take precedence and override global instructions for those chats.

Is this a wbstorm feature?

No. This article covers OpenAI ChatGPT Projects only. wbstorm is a browser brainstorm room unrelated to OpenAI accounts.
