GitHub CLI --attach explained: 2026 media in issues and PRs
GitHub on 1 September: gh v2.99.0 adds a repeatable --attach. Changelog and the cli/cli notes cover the same ship. Enterprise Server is out of this release.
On 1 September 2026, the GitHub Changelog said GitHub CLI gained a repeatable --attach flag. The same day cli/cli tagged v2.99.0. Both pages describe one ship: put a local image or video into an issue, pull request, or comment.
Until this release, gh only wrote text. Adding a screenshot meant opening the browser, dragging a file, and copying the hosted URL back. The changelog says --attach puts the image in the same command that writes Markdown.
What the public notes print
| Item | What they wrote | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Flag | Repeatable --attach | Not a new CLI |
| Commands | issue / pr create, edit, comment | No other subcommands listed |
| Size | Matches the web upload flow | Free video 10 MB; paid 100 MB |
| Hosts | GitHub.com and Enterprise Cloud | Enterprise Server unsupported |
How to read this release
- 1
The CLI gained media
Official text: gh used to write text only. The same command can now upload and reference a local image or video. Do not treat it as a new review product.
- 2
In-body paths are rewritten
If the Markdown already names the local path, gh replaces it with the uploaded URL and keeps the alt text. Unreferenced files are appended. Alt text can follow a hash on the path.
- 3
No new token type
Uploads use OAuth from gh auth login, or a classic personal access token. Write access is required. The changelog also says coding agents can use the flag.
- 4
Server is out of this build
GA on all plans, no preview period. v2.99.0 names GitHub.com and Enterprise Cloud. Enterprise Server is explicitly excluded.
What else the same pages list
Formats and alt text
Images: PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, SVG. Video: MP4, MOV, WebM. If the # description is omitted, the filename is the fallback.
Size follows the web flow
Images and GIFs: 10 MB. Video: 10 MB on Free, 100 MB on paid plans. Official text: same as the web upload.
Short doc link
The release notes point at gh.io/gh-attach. The changelog ends with an editor’s note that the doc link was updated on 1 September.
Limits
The official pages do not give a date when Enterprise Server gets the flag. Next step is the changelog and gh.io/gh-attach. If you only needed a short meeting without another account wall, wbstorm is a browser room ID — see also create or join a room and whiteboard basics.

# CloudNinjas, 2026-09-02Does Enterprise Server get --attach?
The changelog says this release does not support GitHub Enterprise Server. v2.99.0 says attachments work on GitHub.com and Enterprise Cloud.
Do you still have to drag files in the browser?
Official text: that was the old path. The same Markdown-writing command can now take --attach. This article is not a step-by-step tutorial.
Is this a product how-to?
No. This article only checks the 1 September changelog and the v2.99.0 notes. It is not a gh usage guide.
